Executive/Leadership Retreats – YES!

As a CEO or Owner of a company, it is essential to step away from the business and not just be in it all the time. How often do you take your Executive team locally or away for a retreat? At a minimum, it should be once a year but twice is even better.

An example of what the two sessions could look like:

Session 1: Review the goals/results for the current year and set new ones for the next fiscal year. Your goal review should be revenue/profit results, employee retention, and perhaps even acquisition or capital investments needed to take your company to the next level.

Session 2: Five or six months into a fiscal year, gather to review results and adjust the company’s strategic plan as applicable. The meeting might include Executives and top leaders from each department, especially for small to mid-size companies. Large companies should have the Executives attend and then host retreats for their team to devise ideas on how to pivot and execute to achieve the desired goals.

Other things to include in your Executive retreats are team-building activities and some relaxation, like golf, spa, or even fishing, based on your audience and what they would enjoy. One of my favorite things is for an Executive/Leadership team to volunteer together as part of the retreat. It could be as simple as visiting a nursing home or working for a habitat for humanity for a day. If you have a charity organization the company supports, that is where your team should get started.

The retreats can be local or away based on your budget but usually last 2 or 3 days. A nice touch, if budget allows, is to allow significant others to attend. Of course, if you take your team away, they are less distracted.
