It is very common for a business, especially a startup or small business, to think “we need to be on every social channel”. In reality, you need to take a look at your prospect/best customer and see what channels they are using. This does change over time, so staying on top of your social results is important.
What are the social channels today? Linkedin, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Google+, Pinterest, Snapchat, etc. Since there are so many, our recommendation, pick the right channels for your business and spend more time deciding what to share through those specific channels.
The Pixel recently wrote an article that gives an excellent snapshot of the different channels and the users/database. (Thank you to The Pixel for making the marketing/business world better with your expertise.) Take a look at the article and reflect on where your customer is today and how you might share your expertise in an environment they already trust.
A few tips to finish off:
- Spend more time deciding what expertise you are going to share than thinking you need a presence on every channel.
- Pick the right channels and do those right. Once you get them down or you start to see a decline in the results you are looking for from the social vehicles, assess and move on or add another channel.
- Start Ups – Listen Up, don’t use your personal pages. You must have a business page. Use your personal page only for more reach to your business page. Are you going to sell your personal social pages with your company when it is time to exit? (I want to keep my personal pages for my next adventure. Don’t you?)
